Best WordPress Hosting

Why I Made the Switch to WPEngine (and Couldn’t Be Happier)

best wordpress hostingI’ve been building WordPress sites for clients for many years. In the early days, I’d also host those sites on my own server. It was relatively easy to setup and maintain, and I mistakenly thought that the revenue from self-hosting would be worth the effort. Turns out, it’s not. So, I went on a trek to find the best WordPress hosting.

While I can find my way around DNS zones, I am far from an IT expert. When you enter the hosting space, your clients expect you to have that expertise, especially if you are dealing with small and medium sized businesses. I soon found myself helping them troubleshoot email issues and other technical problems that had nothing to do with their web site. This became a huge time suck that was out of my realm of expertise and I didn’t properly bill for.

Things really got out of hand when the hackers started making hay. I have no idea why the Russians want to get into my web sites, but they do. Ok, I have some idea. They want to spawn thousands of spam emails from the domain and bring the server to its knees. Mission accomplished. Now I had to install security plugins (that didn’t actually work) and spend countless hours hunting down SQL injections and losing sleep wondering if the sites were going to still be online in the morning. Even though I was paying a handsome fee for my dedicated server, the company I purchased it from was no help with issues related to web site hosting. (This is an observation, not a criticism.)

One day, all my sites went down at once, and I had several clients who were understandably miffed about that fact. The situation had become untenable, and I needed to find a better way.

A developer that I had used for some other work mentioned that he makes all of his WordPress clients use WP Engine. I asked why, and he said “because then I don’t ever have to worry about hosting.” That was exactly what I needed to hear.

I did my due diligence, and even chatted with their pre-sales team. I was a bit surprised. Not only were they immediately responsive and helpful, they had an option to automatically port all my existing sites and be up and running in no time. I took the plunge, and couldn’t have made a better decision. That was about 3 years ago, and in that span of time I have had no hosting issues. Zero. Zilch. Nada. 100% up time.

The features included are also a huge benefit that I could not do without. Automated daily (and on-demand) backups, staging environment, SSL certificates, CDN. The sites are fast, secure, and easy to manage.

I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the customer service and tech support. Real humans answer the phone or chat within seconds, and are always smart and helpful. Truly wonderful service.

So fast forward to the present. I am making more money with hosting and passing on the savings and better service to my clients. It’s truly a win-win for all parties.
